News From the Field Engineers Develop Low-Cost Recipe for Patterning Microchips
September 2, 2007
| Creating ultrasmall grooves on microchips--a key part of many modern technologies--is about to become as easy as making a sandwich, using a new process invented by Princeton University engineers. The simple, low-cost technique results in the self-formation of periodic lines separated by as few as 60 nanometers on microchips. Features of this size have many uses in optical, biological and electronic devices, including the alignment of liquid crystals in displays. Full story |

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering, with an annual budget of $6.06 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to over 1,900 universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives about 45,000 competitive requests for funding, and makes over 11,500 new funding awards. NSF also awards over $400 million in professional and service contracts yearly.
