Export Servicesspacer
spacer There are several ways of getting your product into an overseas market. A large portion of U.S. exports are either sold to domestic buyers who represent foreign customers and who export the product themselves, or through an export agent or other intermediary. In these cases, the US company does not have to deal with the complexities of setting up product distribution. Most companies, for a variety of reasons including greater control and potentially greater profit, choose to export directly.

However, it requires careful organization and research on specific country requirements, market conditions, etc. to determine the best channels of distribution (e.g., sales representatives, agents, licensees, distributors) for your product.FAS offers a variety of services to help you determine specific country procedures for importing, marketing information and useful contacts to help get your product into the overseas market.

The following are services currently available:

Food and Agricultural Import Regulations and Standards (FAIRS) Reports contain, by country, descriptions of import procedures and lists of useful contacts to help get your product into the market. These reports are available in a searchable online database under the options FAIRS product specific reports and Foods and Agricultural Import Regulations reports.

A list of Cooperators International Offices provides the contact points for foreign representatives of industry associations, by market sector and by country, who can assist you in developing your channels of distribution.

The FAS Export Directory of U.S. Food Distribution Companies also provides information on consolidators and distributors who ship mixed containers to markets around the world.

FAS Country Sector Reports provide overviews of particular countries, but also contain (by country) Market Specific Reports which provide detailed information on marketing and distributing certain products within the country. To access these reports choose Retail Sectors Reports from the Attache database.

The Office of Export Trading Company Affairs (OETCA) is part of the Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration. OETCA promotes the formation and use of export trade intermediaries and export joint ventures.
