USGS Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Has avian influenza been found on any National Wildlife Refuge?

Answer:

  • The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 strain of avian influenza has not been detected in North America, including on any National Wildlife Refuge, National Park, or any other Department of the Interior Trust lands. Other low pathogenic strains of avian influenza, however, are commonly present in waterfowl and shorebirds.
