How to Use the Archives

Research can be initiated in person, or by telephone, mail, or electronic mail. If you wish to use archival holdings on-site, please contact us before visiting.

If you are planning to visit us, please note the following information.

Rules & Regulations

To use archival records, visitors must present a NARA researcher identification card.

  • Applicants must show official identification with a photograph, such as a driver's license, passport, school, or business ID.
  • Applicants must complete a form providing their name, address, telephone number, and a brief description of their research.
  • Researcher ID cards are valid for 1 year and may be renewed.
  • A researcher ID card is not required to view records or search databases in the microfilm/genealogy room.
  • Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Only paper and pencil, laptop computers, or portable audio recording devices may be used for note taking. Briefcases, pocketbooks, bags, and other personal items must be checked in a locker or returned to your vehicle. Eating, drinking, and smoking are not permitted in the Research Room.

Microfilm

Our self-service microfilm readers and microfilm printers are available without an appointment. We may impose time limits if a waiting list develops. Researchers using microfilm do not need a NARA researcher ID card.

Photocopying

  • The availability of photocopies depends on the physical condition of the documents.

The archives facility has self-service paper copiers and self-service microfilm copiers. It also provides a copying service. Staff may restrict copying if the records are fragile or have other limitations.

Upon request, staff will make or arrange for copies of oversized documents, certified copies for legal use, photographs, or other specialized copies. Fees vary depending on size and type of reproduction.
