The National Science Board approved continued funding for the Scientific Ocean Drilling Vessel. The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) conducts basic research into the history of the ocean basins and the overall nature of the crust beneath the ocean floor using the scientific drill ship JOIDES Resolution.

A grant to develop a Terascale Computing System was awarded to Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) in August 2000 by the National Science Foundation following review by the NSB. The final system will serve U.S. researchers in all science and engineering disciplines with a peak speed of over six trillion calculations per second (teraflops).

Working surface: The NSF South Pole research station has become a construction site for two generations of neutrino detectors, AMANDA and IceCube. IceCube was approved by NSB as a follow-up to AMANDA.
