IAEM-STUDENTS COUNCIL
(06/20/08) Results of the IAEM Student Council's 2008 Emergency Management Student Survey were presented at the FEMA Higher Education Conference on June 5, 2008. Almost 300 students of emergency management participated in the survey, which included such topics as demographics, academics, internships and faculty. The survey is organized each year by the IAEM Student Council to create a better understanding for emergency managers and academics of the trends among students in the field. survey results
(05/14/08) The IAEM Student Council recently announced the creation of groups on Facebook and MySpace! The goal of this project is to allow for more open communication between all members of the Council, as well as a forum to share information and event notices. To access the MySpace group, you must have a MySpace profile, then search "IAEM" under Groups. To access the Facebook page, you must have a Facebook profile, then just search "IAEM" under Groups.
(05/08/08)The IAEM Student Council announces the guidelines of the 2008 Student Poster Competition! You asked for changes and we listened! Based on feedback from both students and faculty, we have improved the competition in three major categories:
- Due to complaints of not having enough time to complete a poster, we are distributing details of the competition a full six months prior to the conference.
- We have increased the number of monetary prizes from three to six.
- We now have one competition for graduate students and one for undergraduate students.

Michael Kemp, Volunteer Coordinator for the upcoming June 2-5, 2008 FEMA Higher Education Conference, has issued a Call for Student Volunteers. Students currently enrolled in a college/university emergency management program are needed to fulfill the position of student volunteer recorder/reporters. Download complete details here.

The application for the 2008 IAEM Scholarship Program can be downloaded here. IAEM’s Scholarship Program is available to full-time students pursuing degrees in emergency management or related programs. The application and all supportive materials must be sent to IAEM’s headquarters to arrive prior to the deadline of May 16, 2008. This year’s application includes a new section that provides tips for those applying for a scholarship through the program. If you are a student, we encourage you to review this opportunity. Please feel free to pass this information along to students that you know.
The IAEM Student Region is pleased to announce the winners of the Second IAEM Annual Research Poster Presentation Contest. Presentations in this form afforded students an opportunity to interact with practitioners as they explained their research and received feedback from professionals and educators in the emergency management field. This served as an opportunity to identify and analyze an issue, research it, and articulate conclusions and proposed solutions. These skills are integral to the future success of students in the emergency management field.
There were eight total entries, and six students actually presented their research during the IAEM 55th Annual Conference & EMEX 2007 in Reno, Nevada. The first place poster, entitled "A New Paradigm in Post-Disaster Redevelopment (Recovery)
Planning," was presented by Brian Silva, graduate student at Metropolitan College of New York, who was given a certificate and cash award of $300. Second place and a cash award of $150 were given to Richard Monroe, a doctoral student at the University of South Dakota, for his poster entitled "Disaster Mental Health in Emergency Management: Principles and Practices." Third place and a cash award of $50 were presented to Deon Pfenning, an undergraduate student at the University of North Texas, for his poster entitled "Human Capital in the 9/11 Waterborne Evacuations."
The members of the IAEM Student Region have elected new officers who will take office during the IAEM 2007 Annual Conference in Reno. The new officers are:
President - Brian Silva;
Vice President - Daniel Hahn;
Secretary - Andrew Jarvi; and
Treasurer - Patrick Hardy. The bylaws amendments passed, and updated regional bylaws will be posted soon.
IAEM Student Region President Ernest Wheeler issued a Call for Nominations for officers of the IAEM Student Region. Nominations close on . Please read the Duties of Officers and think about whether you are ready to serve the association as a leader of the Student Region. Presentation at the 2007 FEMA Higher Ed Conference by Brad Wilson, Student Region Vice President. Survey respondents were 228 students actively enrolled in EM or related programs. The survey covered EM student demographics; opinions on programs, professors and courses; internships; research, conference attendance and publications; suggestions for program changes; and opinions on events and the field of EM.
(05/21/07) The ProVention Consortium is pleased to announce the launch of the 2007-2008 Research & Action Grants for Disaster Risk Reduction. Students and young professionals from developing countries are invited to propose creative projects and innovative ideas for support. Please assist us by passing this message on to young disaster risk reduction champions (staff in non-governmental, government and private sector, graduate students, recent graduates) in developing countries! The Research and Action Grants for Disaster Risk Reduction programme is designed to engage enthusiastic young students and professionals in developing countries in creating innovative links between research and action in disaster risk reduction. Applicants are invited to seek ways to cut across professional disciplines and to exchange knowledge and engage stakeholders from scientific and academic, civilian, public and private sectors. If you think that you have a project that will bridge the gap between knowledge and action in disaster risk reduction, and make your country, region, city or district safer - please apply. You may solve an urgent problem or document valuable lessons to be learned in the field; apply and test findings in a new physical, socio-political or cultural context; delve into subjects ignored by researchers in other places; or learn how to scale-up action, change policy, or link disaster risk reduction to other themes like urbanization or climate adaptation. (11/15/06) IAEM hosted its first student poster presentations at the IAEM 2006 Annual Conference & EMEX Exhibit in Orlando. The contest, facilitated by the IAEM Student Region, was open to all IAEM student members, and the winner received a $500 cash prize.
