Initiated by the Standards Engineering Society (SES) in 1990, the U.S. celebration of World Standards Day is now a joint effort between the private and public sector. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) co-chair the event with participation by some 50 trade associations, professional societies, standards development organizations, corporations, and government agencies. The celebration pays tribute to the value of standardization to the nation?s economy and the public.
Each year the U.S. celebration includes a reception, exhibits, dinner, and presentation of the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award. Named after the late U.S. Secretary of Commerce, the award recognizes demonstrated leadership in promoting the important role of standardization in eliminating global barriers to trade. A World Standards Day Paper Competition is administered by SES, on behalf of the U.S. World Standards Day Planning Committee, to encourage individuals to submit papers relating to important issues affecting the standards community. A new theme is selected each year. The first place winner receives a plaque and $2,500. Second and third place winners receive $1,000 and $500 respectively, along with a certificate.
