Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) Program

Learn reinsurance principles and practices. The new curriculum features electives to let you tailor your study and a contemporary reinsurance readings course. You will gain an enhanced understanding of reinsurance terms and pricing, reinsurance treaties, and facultative certificates. You will also develop the necessary skills to design a reinsurance program. If you are a reinsurance professional working outside the U.S., earning the ARe designation can help you to better understand the U.S. market.

Required Courses

The following courses (plus one elective) are required to earn the ARe designation:

ARe 143—Primary Insurance Coverages: Overview of Personal Insurance, Personal Auto, Homeowners Insurance, Miscellaneous Personal Insurance Coverages, Commercial Property Insurance, Business Income Insurance, Inland and Ocean Marine, Commercial General Liability, Commercial Auto, and Workers Compensation and Employers Liability Insurance.

ARe 144—Reinsurance Principles and Practices: Introduction to Reinsurance, Types of Reinsurance and Reinsurance Program Design, The Reinsurance Placement Process, Common Reinsurance Treaty Clauses, Quota Share Treaties, Surplus Share Treaties, Property Per Risk Excess of Loss Treaties, Casualty Excess of Loss Treaties, Catastrophe Reinsurance, Aggregate Excess of Loss Treaties, Reinsurance Audits, Reinsurance Regulation, Reinsurance Aspects of the NAIC Annual Statement, and Reserves.

ARe 145—Readings in Reinsurance Issues and Developments: Students examine reinsurance topics from contemporary journals and periodicals. Students will read articles online and answer multiple-choice questions on each article. The course must be completed in 12 months.

There are no textbooks or course guides for ARe 145. Students read the articles online through the Institutes’ Web site and pay a course administration fee. Contact Customer Support for details.

CPCU 520-Insurance Operations, Regulation, and Statutory Accounting

Course Sequence: It is better to take ARe 143 before ARe 144.

For your elective, choose one of the following:
CPCU 540—Finance for Risk Management and Insurance Professionals
ARM 56—Risk Financing
AIAF 111—Statutory Accounting for Property-Casualty Insurers

Exam Type

ARe 143/144: Eighty-five computer-administered, objective (multiple-choice) questions. Time allotted: 2 hours.

ARe 145: You will answer 5, 10, or 15 multiple-choice questions on each article and you must correctly answer 150 questions to complete the course. There will be at least 40 articles available from which to choose. There is no end of course exam.

CPCU 520 and 540: Computer-administered essay. Time allotted: 3 hours.
