Associate in Personal Insurance (API) Program

Strengthen your knowledge of personal lines. Earning the Associate in Personal Insurance (API) designation will help you strengthen your knowledge of personal lines insurance. You will gain a thorough understanding of the personal insurance business, including underwriting, marketing practices, the personal insurance environment, personal insurance profitability, the product development process, and portfolio management.

Required Courses

The following courses are required to earn this designation:

API 28-Personal Insurance: Underwriting and Marketing Practices. Identifying Customer Needs, Marketing, Regulation, Personal & Premises Liability, Auto, Umbrella, Residential Property, Inland Marine, Watercraft

API 29-Personal Insurance: Portfolio Management and Issues. Personal Insurance Market, Developing Products, Underwriting Profitability, Pricing, Reunderwriting, Personal Lines Issues

INS 21-Property and Liability Insurance Principles

INS 22-Personal Insurance

Course sequence: It is best to take the courses in the following order: INS 21, INS 22, API 28, and API 29. The study material for each course presumes that you have mastered the knowledge in any preceding course(s).

Course waiver information: Passing CPCU 553 or CPCU 2 waives INS 22 for the purpose of earning API. You can also earn API by passing API 28, CPCU 555, and CPCU 556.

Exam Type

API 28/29, INS 21/22: Eighty-five computer-administered, objective (multiple-choice) questions. Time allotted: 2 hours.
