Swede Midge - Contarinia nasturtii

Swede midge (female) - Dr. R.H. Hallett, Dept. of Environmental Biology, University of Guelph

Swede midge (Contarinia nasturtii) is a pest of "Brassicaceae" crops, which include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, radish and canola. In Canada, swede midge is present in most areas of Quebec and Ontario where these crops are grown and was recently found in Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. The larvae of swede midge feed on Brassicaceae crops, resulting in deformed plants, decreased seed production and reduced crop yield. As an adult, swede midge is a small (1.5-2 mm) fly that does not harm crops.

There is no threat to human health from this pest.
