Here are four easy steps to make your PC Net Safe: Turn on a Firewall This prevents unwanted people and programs from accessing your PC through the Internet. Update your Operating System Your operating system (Microsoft® Windows®, for example) is your computer’s brain. It is important to install updates released by your operating system provider. Install Antivirus Software Update this software regularly to protect against new viruses, worms, or other nasty programs. It is important to subscribe to regular security updates. Install Anti-spyware Programs Spyware can compromise personal data or prevent your PC from functioning properly. Anti-spyware programs must be updated often. Think before you click Sometimes, just clicking on an e-mail is all you have to do to infect your computer with a virus or give unwanted access to your personal information. If you’re not sure who a message or Web site is from, be very cautious. Or even better—don’t open it in the first place. Here are some more tips to Get Net Safe 1› Be sure you know where an e-mail is from before responding to it, even if it looks like it’s from a trusted source. 2› Don’t share personal information in an e-mail or instant message.
