2008 Global Summit on Education: Inclusive Practices for Students
With Disabilities
The purpose of this summit is to continue the dialogue that began in October
2007 at the Global Policy Summit on the Well-Being of People with Intellectual
Disabilities, in Shanghai, China. In hosting this event, the Department
of Education is bringing together education leaders, advocates for people with
disabilities, educators, academics, and government officials to:
- Promote an international dialogue on education for students with disabilities;
- Identify valuable tools and resources to provide high quality academic opportunities for students with disabilities; and
- Share successes and challenges from a global perspective.

Knudsen to Serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Special
Education and Rehabilitative Services.
William W. Knudsen will now serve as the permanent deputy assistant secretary
for the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services after serving
as acting deputy assistant secretary. Prior to his current position, Knudsen
was a special assistant to the assistant secretary of education in the Office
of Legislation and Congressional Affairs (OLCA). In that capacity, he worked
with Congress on the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA) and on the development of the IDEA
regulations. His portfolio also included covering all aspects of disability
policy under the Department’s jurisdiction. Prior to working on IDEA,
Knudsen worked on various policy issues, including the No Child Left Behind
Act (NCLB), and served as the Department’s Western Regional
Liaison. Knudsen also served as the Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs
and as the chief of staff for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education at
the United States Department of Education.

The ICDR Seeks Comments
at Public Meeting
The Interagency Committee on Disability Research (ICDR),
authorized by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, is holding
a meeting to seek comments from the public with respect to the federal disability
and rehabilitation research agenda. This dialogue with the public is of critical
importance, and we are encouraging individuals with disabilities, persons who
represent service providers, service provider organizations, disability and
rehabilitation research and policy groups, and representatives of advocacy organizations
with specialized knowledge and experience to suggest specific ways to improve
future research for individuals with disabilities. The ICDR is also interested
in hearing from individuals concerning how well the existing federal research
programs are responding to the changing needs of individuals with disabilities.
Within the context of this approach, the ICDR is also asking for input on the
continuum of care for wounded, injured or ill military service members.
