Running for Office: Candidates, Campaigns, and the Cartoons of Clifford Berryman

Throwing Your Hat in the Ring!

In these cartoons, Berryman captures potential candidates as they consider this decisive first step of the campaign process.

"Gettin’ Awful Crowded" January 28, 1924
In the months leading up to the 1924 primaries, Missouri Senator Jim Reed is shown "throwing his hat in the ring" while the Democratic donkey worries about the increasingly crowded field.

"The Busy Bee" August 1, 1919
With a multitude of potential candidates having the proverbial "bee in their bonnets," the G.O.P. Presidential nomination bee could not keep up. The bee was a common character in Berryman’s cartoons representing political aspirations or the "buzz" in the potential candidate’s ear.
