General Dailey
Pays Tribute to the Hubble Project
On July 2, the
Hubble Space Telescope Program held a recognition ceremony to pay
tribute to the team spirit that led to the successful Servicing
Mission 3B. The keynote speaker for the event was General John R.
Dailey, Director of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
Other speakers included, William Townsend, Deputy Center Director;
Preston Burch, Program Manager for HST; Dr. David Leckrone, Senior
HST scientist; Frank Cepollina, Project Manager for HST Development;
and David Scheve, Project Manager for HST Operations.
The Space Shuttle
Columbia journeyed to the Hubble Space Telescope for the fourth
servicing mission on March 1, 2002. During a series of five spacewalks,
astronauts installed a new science instrument, the Advanced Camera
for Surveys; new rigid solar arrays; a new power control unit; a
new cooling system that revived the dormant Near Infrared and Multi-Object
Spectrometer; and one reaction wheel assembly. After a successful
mission spanning 11 days in orbit, the shuttle landed safely on
March 12 at Kennedy Space Center, Fla.
