U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor Announces Grant to Train Pennsylvania Workers for Careers in Geospatial Industry
Grant Is Part of $4.9 Million for Geospatial Industry Training Under the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative

YORK, Pa. - U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco today announced a $990,125 grant to the William Goodling Advanced Skills Center (ASC) to establish a geospatial technology education training center. The grant is part of a $4.9 million effort for geospatial industry training funded under the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative.

"Geospatial industry leaders who have met with us expressed the need for increased education and training at the high school, community college, and university level to develop a pipeline of workers armed with the skills the industry demands," said DeRocco. "This grant reaffirms the President's commitment to address the geospatial industry's workforce challenges by preparing workers for good careers."

The program will target high school students, dislocated workers and underemployed adults. It will also include internship opportunities for participants.

The geospatial industry is an information technology that manages, interprets and displays geographic, temporal, and spatial data. Occupations in the geospatial technology sector include engineers, mapping technicians, surveyors, architects, cartographers and more.

The President's High Growth Job Training Initiative is a strategic effort to better prepare workers to take advantage of new job opportunities in high growth sectors of the American economy. Through executive forums with leaders of expanding industries, critical workforce gaps and issues are identified. Solutions are then created in cooperation with employers, educational institutions and the public workforce system. For more information, please visit www.doleta.gov/BRG/JobTrainInitiative/.
