U.S. Department of Labor announces grant exceeding $3.5 million to  assist dislocated airline workers in Indiana

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $3,520,000 grant to assist approximately 350 workers affected by the closure of ATA Airlines Inc. in Indianapolis, Ind.

“This $3.5 million grant will offer a range of re-employment services to these workers to help them find new jobs and career paths,” said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

On April 3, ATA Airlines Inc. informed its employees that it would cease all operations, and all employees would be laid off immediately.

The grant, awarded to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, will provide ATA workers with re-employment services, including skills assessments, individual career counseling and occupational skills training.  Comprehensive assessments will determine current and transferable skills to identify the length and type of training necessary.  For some workers, short-term intensive training will link current skills to high-wage, high-growth jobs.  For those with limited transferable skills, longer term training will be available.

Of the total announced today, $1,391,500 will be released initially. Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need to serve these workers.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
