Labor Department Awards $3 Million to TEC Services Consulting for High-Tech Training

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration has awarded $3 million to TEC Services Consulting to train approximately 1,000 individuals in information technology and computer science.

"This Administration is committed to helping workers get the training they need to get good paying jobs," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "This $3 million grant will be used to upgrade the skills of workers."

Naperville, Ill.-based TEC Services will use the Labor Department grant to serve approximately 400 incumbent workers and 600 unemployed individuals. Training will reach 200 qualified minorities, 50 women, and 25 people with disabilities. Also, two openings in each training class will be reserved for qualified veterans seeking training.

Training will take place in a variety of focus areas to include; web application development, database administration, network security, IT project management and technology trainer training.

Approximately 950 of the 1,000 trainees will be provided the highest level of training, while approximately 50 individuals will be placed on a career ladder towards the highest level.

Partnering employers and training providers have committed to provide $4.1 million in matching funds in the form of facilities, training, tuition offset and paid release time.

"This grant illustrates the kind of workforce development partnerships we are encouraging to address the challenges facing 21st century businesses," said Emily Stover DeRocco, assistant secretary of labor for employment and training. "When businesses identify the skills their workforce needs, educators and our public workforce system can be key players in preparing workers for the highly skilled jobs in high-demand fields."

This grant and others totaling approximately $49 million were awarded competitively to business-led partnerships nationwide to train workers for high-skill, high-tech occupations.
