Denise Austin

Denise AustinDenise Austin of Alexandria, Virginia – Denise Austin was appointed to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports by President George W. Bush in June 2002.  Ms. Austin promotes a sensible, realistic, and enthusiastic approach to fitness and nutrition. Her health and fitness philosophies have earned recognition throughout the United States. Ms. Austin has produced and appeared in over fifty exercise videos and DVDs including Ultimate Fat Burner, the Get Fit Fast video series, Power Yoga Plus, and Pilates for Everybody. She hosts two fitness shows for Lifetime Television: Denise Austin's Daily Workout and Fit & Lite. She has authored numerous books on fitness and nutrition and is a columnist for Prevention magazine. Ms. Austin is an acknowledged expert on health and fitness; she has appeared frequently on national television and has spoken at national conferences. She testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions' hearing, "Improved Nutrition and Physical Activity Act," and helped launch the new food guidance system of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, www.MyPyramid.gov, in Washington, DC (April 2005).

A native of San Pedro, California, Ms. Austin started doing gymnastics at the age of 12 and earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Arizona, graduating in 1979 from the California State University, Long Beach, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education, with an emphasis on exercise physiology. She began teaching aerobic exercise classes in the Los Angeles area and earned her own local television program two years later. In 1983, she married Jeff Austin, a sports attorney. They live in Alexandria, Virginia, with their two daughters.
