Striving to keep people of all ages excited about physical activity is one of AAHPERD’s main goals for 2006. What better way to fulfill this goal than to organize an exciting record breaking event at the World’s Fair for Kids in Orlando, Florida? On April 17, 2006, 3,000 people will gather together with AAHPERD to jump rope for three minutes to break the current standing world record for the largest number of people to jump rope simultaneously. It’s not too late to reserve your place in history—for more information and to register for the event, visit www.aahperd.org or www.wfkids.com. Closer to home, AAHPERD headquarters recently began their second annual cross-country competition—this year’s destination, Salt Lake City, Utah, home of the 2006 National Convention. On January 1, eight teams began the trek “on foot.” Teammates wear pedometers daily and keep a log of weekly miles, all in effort to be the first to reach the finish line in Salt Lake City. While employees enjoy the good-spirited rivalry of the race, all agree that they benefit most from the additional physical activity that the event encourages.

The mission of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), the principal membership organization representing and promoting the profession of physical therapy, is to further the profession's role in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of movement dysfunctions and the enhancement of the physical health and functional abilities of members of the public.

The APTA has a long history of promoting the importance of health, wellness, and physical fitness for all individuals, especially those with existing or at risk for impairments, functional limitations or disability. In so doing, there are many opportunities to promote the goals we share with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports:

  • Through our website, weekly member email blasts, component newsletters and other publications, continued education sessions and conferences, and locals and federal advocacy efforts, the APTA have easy access to internal and external stakeholders. Activities important to promoting physical activity and function can be easily communicated through these vehicles to a wide audience including physical therapists and their patients/clients.
  • APTA is an active partner with many associations/organizations that promote physical fitness and health (e.g. National Blueprint, Falls Free Coalition, and the Special Olympics). These collaborations will foster the role and mission of the PCPFS
  • APTA has initiated a special project entitled “Physical Fitness for Special Populations” whose mission is to increase awareness, provide resources and tools, and enhance a physical therapist’s ability to positively influence an individual's overall health, wellness, and fitness. This project has a dedicated area on the website to provide resources to physical therapists and their patients/clients to encourage community based physical fitness activities.

The Oakland Panthers Walking Milers Club takes a proactive role in combating the National Epidemic of Childhood Obesity. Students walk before and after school to collect laps that are tabulated into miles walked to make a life change to get moving. Children who are physically moving have a better physical and mental well-being.

  • We plan to invite parents to come to school one evening to get up and get moving. We would like to call that evening, "Panthers and Parents Wellness for the World." Invite local papers, television, and radio personalities to come and support our students.
  • Invite Carroll County Wellness Center to come and present the amenities it has to offer to families.
  • Set up stations with teacher and parent volunteers to just have parents and children walk, run and play together.
  • Try to get a "famous sports personality" to come and mingle with families to encourage them all to make a life change.
