Active for Life® has been established to learn how to deliver research-based physical activity programs to large numbers of mid-life and older adults, and to sustain such programs through existing community institutions.

Active for Life (AFL) was established at The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health, with funding from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to reduce physical inactivity among mid-life and older adults. Technical assistance and direction are provided to nine community based organizations that are testing the effectiveness, reach and sustainability of two behavioral interventions to promote physical activity in this population. Additionally, A4L will develop a learning network to disseminate lessons learned to communities promoting interested in promoting healthy aging. A4L is also examining the utility of adopting intergenerational strategies to address childhood obesity.

The President’s Challenge program will be incorporated in a training program for middle and high school-aged children to culminate in the participation of the Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis 5K Run/Walk or 1-mile Reindeer Run on November 25, 2006 at Sundance Square, downtown Fort Worth.  The training program begins September/October through race day.  Training can take place at Fort Worth schools, local gyms or community centers.

Our goals are to empower young people who are challenged with a chronic disease, overweight or an inactive lifestyle; to initiate healthy actions and behaviors as well as develop attitudes that can promote positive change; and to bring awareness of the children afflicted with arthritis and related diseases and motivate our youth to ‘Get Moving’ to help themselves and others.

Our activities seek to involve parent child interaction.  So the type of activities we promote, create and provide are activities that can be done by both parent and child together.  We've found that parents who are active have children who are active, parents who are sedentary have children who are sedentary and finally parents who are overweight have children who are overweight.  Therefore we create activities like the marathon challenge which is a lifestyle changing program that last for 11-13 weeks usually culminating with the Houston Marathon (or like event).  Participants (parent child) are required to spend a minimum of 1 hour per week walk/jog for 2 miles (this last for 11 weeks).  The final week the participants can join the marathon and complete a 5K (3.1 miles) thus completing 26 miles over that time period.  We have a similar event for biking and during the summer we have a summer camp geared toward performance enhancement.

As Americans, we all struggle with lack of exercise, poor diet choices, stress and/or being overweight.  We want to encourage our young people through our Summer Reading Program to also work on physical fitness.  Reading the Sport of Champions is our theme and we want to help our community’s youth learn to make better choices in their future beginning in the 50th Anniversary year of President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.  We plan to include all ages in our quest to achieve better mental and physical fitness in our town’s Centennial Year 1906-2006.  We want to make it count!

We have an incentive awards program that encourages folks to get going in our program once they have done their first event. In this area of Texas we have a calendar of events that fills nearly every weekend (except in July and August) of the year. Our programs are open to all and we encourage participation by families and individuals and folks from pre-kindergarten age to seniors [some even over 85 years]. We look forward to making our participants aware of the President’s Challenge and other programs promoted by the Council.
