Avoyelles Council on Aging will host, on May 4, 2006, a Mini Senior Olympics/Health Fair at a local walking trail. The seniors will start the morning with exercise and a race walk, then we will enjoy games and lunch. Health vendors do screenings such as eye, blood pressure, etc.
We will have different competitions during the month leading up to the end of May where we will go to the Central District Competition. We will also do a strong recruitment to get more seniors involved in our daily exercise classes.
Black Belt Academy of Martial Arts offers classes for kids ages 6 to 12 and adults 13 and up, 3-4 times per week. The curriculum is designed to promote both physical and mental growth. The exercise programs include a full range of muscle groups along with several rarely used groups for overall physical fitness. The program also includes stretching exercises and proper eating tips.
Given the magnitude of the health and fitness problem facing Americans today, particularly children, it is imperative that more high-level emphasis be placed on improving the health and fitness of our citizens.
The Fit for Life Day, scheduled for May 12-13, 2006, in Shreveport, LA, was conceived to address this serious social problem. Specifically, we shall target elementary and middle school students. The event will include a plethora of coed track and field events, karate, cheerleading, gymnastics and strength events including bench press competitions, tire flips, truck push, and the tug of war event during Super-Mann Blount's Ultimate Team Challenge contingent. The Southern Cup USA Bodybuilding & Figure Championships will be included in the events. Each activity is designed to heighten awareness of the importance of health, fitness, good nutrition and a physically active lifestyle.
The National Senior Games Association is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for active adults 50 and over through education, fitness and sport. Through its programs, the NSGA assists active adults in achieving greater value and quality in their lives by staying healthy, active and fit.
The NSGA strives to pursue every adult 50 and over and encourage some type of activity through one of our State Organizations. The NSGA has State Organizations in 49 states, the District of Columbia and the Veteran’s Games who assist in promoting healthy lifestyles. These Organizations provide activity at various levels from mental acuity games to basic and competitive physical activity. We have also begun to reach several international countries that are interested in partnering with NSGA. Your message is always forwarded to each of these Organizations to promote within their State.
Our Core Research Project will identify and address barriers to physical activity in a defined, low-income New Orleans neighborhood. Based on community input, the project team will implement one “community-wide” physical environmental change and will then assess the impact on physical activity within the neighborhood. Other center activities include working with city planners to rebuild the city in ways that promote physical activity and better nutrition and development of the Physical Activity Assessment Tool for use in medical settings.
