During 2002, a systematic examination of approximately 30 bottom sediment and associated overlying water-column samples were collected across 12 states to determine the relative presence of pharmaceuticals and other Emerging contaminants in these two environmental media. Preliminary results indicate that sediment is an important potential reservoir for emerging contaminants and needs to be considered when examining environmental occurrence, fate, transport, and exposures.
