USGS scientists and their partners held the 2001 meeting of the Unsaturated Zone Interest Group (UZIG), in Idaho Falls, Idaho, July 30 - August 2, 2001. The objectives of the meeting were to provided an opportunity for scientists to meet and share unsaturated zone research results in an informal setting, and to receive feedback from a diverse audience on work in progress. USGS scientists as well as scientists from organizations such as Department of Energy National Laboratories, U.S. Department of Agricultural, and universities attended the meeting. Presentations at the meetings presented information on topics such as:

  • Aquifer recharge from streams
  • Artificial recharge and aquifer storage
  • Heat and water flow in the unsaturated zone
  • Hydrology of the unsaturated zone in fractured rock
  • Methods for measuring and estimating unsaturated hydraulic conductivity
  • Flow and diffusion of gases in the unsaturated zone
  • Bioremediation and transformation of contaminants in the unsaturated zone
  • Transport of agricultural chemicals from the soil to ground water
