Use of Bioremediation Technologies at Oxygenate-Impacted Sites-Short Course

The USGS and its partners will conduct a short course entitled "Use of Bioremediation Technologies at Oxygenate-Impacted Sites" at the Seventh International Symposium on In Situ and On-Site Bioremediation in Orlando, Florida, on June 6, 2003. The short course will provide an overview of the mechanisms responsible for the biodegradation of fuel oxygenates. The following topics will be presented at the short course:

  • Biodegradation of fuel oxygenates under aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen) conditions.
  • Fuel oxygenate bioremediation case studies (with a focus on sites contaminated with methyl tert-butyl ether MTBE and tert-butyl alcohol TBA).
  • The effect of ethanol on the biodegradation of common gasoline constituents (BTEX).
  • The factors that limit the biodegradation of fuel oxygenates in the environment.
