Animal Feeding Operations: Environmental Quality, Fluxes, Impacts, and Monitoring at the Local, Farm, and Watershed Scale

The USGS in partnership with the University of California's Kearney Agricultural Center and U.S. Department of Agriculture's, National Soil Tilth Laboratory sponsored a special session on "Animal Feeding Operations: Environmental Quality, Fluxes, Impacts, and Monitoring at the Local, Farm, and Watershed Scale" at the American Geophysical Union's Spring 2000 Meeting, Washington, DC, May 30 - June 3, 2000. The objective of the session was to present information on the impact of AFOs on streams and ground water, water-quality monitoring strategies for AFOs, and assessments of AFO management practices. The information presented at the session will help promote a solid scientific understanding of the environmental processes affecting the quality of air, surface water, soil, and ground water that can be used to develop low impact management solutions for AFOs.
