U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientist Dr. John R. Nimmo gave a seminar entitled "A New Method for Simple Prediction of Maximum Transport Rate in Unsaturated Soil and Rock," Menlo Park, California, March 8, 2007. The objectives of Dr. Nimmo's research are to test the validity of existing theories related to unsaturated-zone fluxes and correct or extend them where necessary; to develop fast, accurate, practical methods for measuring unsaturated-zone fluxes and the physical characteristics that determine them; to apply and promote routine use of these experimental and theoretical methods in hydrological studies where the unsaturated zone plays an important role; and to assess the importance of complicating influences (temperature gradients, dispersion, hysteresis, ...) on water and solute fluxes. The seminar was part of the USGS's biweekly Water Resources Discipline Research Seminar Series. A streaming video of the seminar is available. Contact
