National Food and Society
Roundtable on Obesity and Youth
The National Food and Society Roundtable
on Obesity and Youth sponsored by CSREES,
W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the National
Association of State Universities and Land-Grant
Colleges (NASULGC), was held in Washington,
D.C. July 19-20, 2005. The meeting sought
to identify childhood obesity prevention—policy,
research, extension, and education strategies
for the local, state, and national systems
represented by Land-Grant Universities and
USDA, and to forge new initiatives to enhance
related program leadership.
The Roundtable's goals were:
- setting the context for action in
preventing childhood obesity from the perspective
of NASULCG, CSREES, and Institute of Medicine,
a component of the National Academy of
Sciences;
- describing innovative and effective approaches
to address childhood obesity, its reduction
and prevention that involves both ecological
community–based and behavioral community-focused
education;
- describing effective physical activity
and nutrition interventions and programs
to reduce childhood obesity;
- describing obesity-related research opportunities
and challenges for the USDA Agricultural
Research Service, and community based-policy
and higher education;
- recommending strategies for CSREES and
its federal and university partners to:
- effect policy change at the federal,
state, and local levels,
- expand the relevant research base and
its practical applications,
- promote the expansion of best practices
and other outreach strategies, and
- prepare the next generation of researchers
and educators to address the complexity
of obesity.
A Guiding Group Committee was created following
the Roundtable to implement its recommended
strategies. Its progress and resources will
be documented through this Web page.
