Arkansas Delta Training and Education Consortium receives U.S. Labor
 Department’s Recognition of Excellence Award
‘Building regionally focused workforce strategy’ honor presented at Workforce Innovations

NEW ORLEANS
– The Arkansas Delta Training and Education Consortium (ADTEC) of West Memphis, Ark., today received the U.S. Department of Labor’s Recognition of Excellence Award in the “building a regionally focused workforce strategy” category at the 2008 Workforce Innovations Conference being held in New Orleans. Throughout this week, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Brent R. Orrell is presenting the fifth annual Recognition of Excellence Awards, which honor workforce investment system programs from around the country that have achieved outstanding success.

“ADTEC has put the Arkansas Delta back on track with an agenda focused on high-tech, high-quality jobs of the future,” said Orrell. “As a result, the Arkansas Delta is poised to achieve long-term prosperity.”

ADTEC has strived to increase the 12-county region’s number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates. The consortium’s goal is to build, within three years, an advanced manufacturing workforce in eastern Arkansas totaling 2,500 new workers.

Through a new university center, bachelor’s degrees will be offered in transportation, distribution and logistics; education; and renewable energy technology to students from five regional community colleges. Curricula and online learning courses also have been developed and implemented by ADTEC to equip students with certifications and associate degrees in these same fields. Through the five regional community colleges, the program can educate students from 35 area school districts.

The Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration presents Recognition of Excellence honors in five categories. The “building a regionally focused workforce strategy” category recognizes public workforce entities that have built their capacity to meet the needs of workers and employers through regional strategies.”

The Workforce Innovations Conference offers an annual opportunity for state and local government representatives, private sector workforce and economic development officials, and educators to collaborate on issues affecting the U.S. workforce.
