Planning Your Retirement Date

Retiring from your career as a Federal civilian employee is a major life event and deciding on a date to retire can be confusing. Benefits Bulletin 2009-5, Planning Your Retirement Date briefly discusses some of the things you should consider when making your decision.

After reading the Bulletin if you have questions you should discuss them with your Civilian Benefits Center Retirement Specialist. You can contact your Retirement Specialist by calling The Benefits Line at 1 888 320 2917 and selecting menu option #4 to talk to a Customer Service Representative (CSR). CSRs are available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Eastern Time, except on federal holidays. The TTY number for the deaf and hard of hearing is 1 866 328-9889.

Message From The Benefits Officer
August 2009

Last year the CBC processed 1,243 retirements effective on one of four days - December 31, January 1, January 2 or January 3. There are important decisions that you must make regarding your benefits so i f you are planning to retire on one of those dates this year you should begin the application process now. By applying early you allow the CBC sufficient time to resolve any issues which may affect your annuity and ensure timely processing of your application.

The retirement application is available online at https://www.civilianbenefits.hroc.navy.mil/retirement_pkg_sem.asp. You may also call The Benefits Line at 1-888-320-2917 if assistance is needed in obtaining the application.

If you have not received a retirement annuity computation you may request one by completing the form available online at https://www.civilianbenefits.hroc.navy.mil/pdf/Annuity_Estimate_Request.pdf and faxing it to the appropriate site listed on the back of the form.
