Involucral bract:

Blade: Shorter than the inflorescence
Sheath-shape: Linear
Mouth: Shallowly U-shaped or truncate

Spikes:

Lowest: Short-exserted, ascending
Upper: Sometimes clustered

Pistillate scales:

Size and color: Greater than 0.2 mm wide, purple with a pale midrib
Pubescence: Generally ciliate near the tip

Perigynium:

Color: Generally mostly purple
Length: 3­4.5
Width: 0.9­1.5
Margins: Generally none or greater than one-half the achene width
Pubescence: Ciliate near and on the beak
