Involucral bract:

Blade: Almost none or very short
Sheath-shape: Conspicuously tapering to the wide mouth
Mouth: Shallowly U-shaped, with a wide purple margin

Spikes:

Lowest: Very long exserted, nodding
Upper: Distant

Pistillate scales:

Size and color: Dark purple with white margins
Pubescence: Glabrous (sometimes with a ciliate awn)

Perigynium:

Color: Dark purple
Length: 4­5.3
Width: 1.7­2.5
Margins: Generally less than three-fourths the achene width
Pubescence: Glabrous
