National Research Initiative: Porcine Genome Sequencing

The NRI Porcine Genome Sequencing Program will support high-throughput sequencing of the porcine genome. The goal of the program is to obtain a draft sequence (approximately three-fold sequence coverage) of 90 percent of the porcine genome. This program will contribute to the international effort of the Swine Genome Sequencing Consortium to obtain an approximate six-fold sequence coverage of the porcine genome. The outcome of draft sequencing projects is expected to include generation of high quality sequence data, organization of the sequence reads into contiguous sequences (contigs), draft assembly of the sequence, and deposition of all information into a publicly accessible, preexisting database.
