What is RSS? |

Fish and wildlife are natural components of our nation's farms, forests, and rangelands. They contribute to healthy ecosystems, provide income to landowners and businesses, and afford recreational and aesthetic benefits to society. Each year, more than 80 million Americans fish, hunt, or watch wildlife, spending about $110 billion in the process. Some wildlife can pose problems to society. The annual cost of wildlife damage to American agriculture is nearly $1 billion, and the cost to human health and property exceeds $2 billion. Seeking to achieve a balance that sustains wildlife populations while minimizing wildlife impacts on human endeavors, CSREES partners with educational institutions such as land-grant universities, state and federal natural resources agencies, and private conservation organizations.

In Focus

• CSREES requested Renewable Resources Extension Act-National Focus Fund projects to develop eXtension Communities of Practice and projects to be replicated.
• The 11th Triennial Extension Wildlife & Fisheries Specialists Conference proceedings demonstrate the effectiveness of extension wildlife and fisheries programs.
• CSREES has solicited research and extension projects to improve grazingland watershed health and help evaluate impacts of conservation projects and programs.
• The Oregon State University 4-H Wildlife Stewards program receives national 2008 Natural Resources Conservation Award.
• CSREES awards $4.6 million to 13 universities and research labs to develop strategies for management, control, and elimination of weedy and invasive species.
• USDA conservation programs help private landowners conserve and enhance their natural resources, including soil, air, water, plants, and animals.

Partnerships

• CSREES works closely with the National Association of University Fisheries and Wildlife Programs to strengthen university education.
• CSREES coordinates with The National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges Section on Fish and Wildlife Resources.
• Coastal and marine fisheries research and extension activities are carried on through CSREES formula funds, in cooperation with National Sea Grant.
