What is RSS? |

Through formal classroom instruction and non-formal training, CSREES offers youth education programs in many "real-world" issues. These include diet and nutrition; the importance of agriculture, natural resources, and the environment; and basic financial management. CSREES partners with the Land-Grant University System, the public and private agricultural and non-agricultural sectors, and other federal, state, and local agencies to fund, develop, and deliver youth education programs.

In Focus

• CSREES directed the multi-agency effort to develop an Avian Influenza Lesson Plan for high school science students.
• CSREES coordinates USDA participation in the My Community, Our Earth partnership, which involves a number of government and private sector organizations.
• The NEFE High School Financial Planning Program® focuses on the basics of money--earning, spending, and saving.
• The Garden Mosaics Project provides an education model for community gardens in which youth, educators, and adult gardeners explore science principles.
• The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) provides low-income youth with diet, food preparation and safety, and related information.
• Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) promotes agricultural literacy among the nation's students.

Partnerships

• CSREES partners with the Department of Health and Human Services to provide resources for Head Start, child care, and out-of-school programs.
• CSREES and other government agencies created My Community, Our Earth (MyCOE): Geographic Learning for Sustainable Development, a program for young people.
• CSREES partners with the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) to revise, deliver, and evaluate the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program®.

Selected Results and Impacts

• A recent study assessed the impact of selected Agriculture in the Classroom teachers on student agricultural literacy.
• CYFAR-funded projects in 48 states and territories involve more than 60,000 youth and adults.
• CSREES is a federal partner in My Community, Our Earth (MyCOE), a project for youth to apply geographic information systems to address community changes.
