Benefits Administration Letter

Number: 99-224 Date: December 14, 1999

Subject: Federal Employees' Health Benefits (FEHB) Program: The New FEHB Program and Medicare Booklet

The purpose of this letter is to announce issuance of the FEHB Program and Medicare booklet.

The booklet (RI 75-12) answers the questions that we at OPM are most frequently asked about how the FEHB Program and Medicare work together to provide health benefits coverage to active or retired Federal employees covered by both programs. The booklet explains what Medicare does and does not cover, who is eligible for Medicare, and how benefits are coordinated between Medicare and FEHB plans. The booklet also contains a section in which terms used throughout the booklet are defined.

The booklet contains information useful to your employees enrolled in the FEHB Program that either currently have Medicare, or are approaching retirement or Medicare eligibility.

The booklet is available for viewing and downloading on our web site (www.opm.gov/insure/MCare/MHBO1.htm) in both html and Adobe Acrobat PDF formats. Adobe Acrobat creates documents that look the same on the screen as they do on paper. You can view and/or print Acrobat PDF ("Portable Document Format") files even if you do not own a copy of the software which created it by using the Acrobat Reader. The Acrobat Reader software is free and may be downloaded from the Adobe web page (www.adobe.com).
