Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) Files (1 Percent) — Census 2000 files containing individual long-form questionnaires for a 1 percent sample of people and housing units in geographic units called super-Public Use Microdata Areas (super-PUMAS), a new geographic entity for Census 2000. The super-PUMAS are made up of a Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA) or group of contiguous PUMAs (each PUMA must have a minimum of 100,000 population). To maintain the confidentiality of the PUMS data, the minimum population threshold for super-PUMAS is 400,000. Information that could identify a household or an individual record is excluded to protect the confidentiality of respondents. The state files, which may contain one or more super-PUMAs, come with maps and geographic equivalency files, showing the relationship between the super-PUMA and standard Census 2000 geography concepts (e.g., counties, etc.). (PUMAs are delineated and shown only on the 5 percent PUMS files, which will be released at a later date.) Files for the states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico will be released first as ASCII-format FTP files on the Internet and later on CD-ROM. (Tentatively scheduled for release during the weeks of April 20 or April 27: FL, NJ, NY, RI, VT and WY).

Guam Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) File — Census 2000 file containing individual census questionnaires for a sample of 10 percent of Guam's population and housing units. Today there are more than 216,000,000 cars, trucks and buses zipping along the nation's highway system. Our newest Feature Photo of the Month, suitable for illustrating this fact, depicts license plates from Illinois and Wisconsin. Click on <http://www.census.gov/pubinfo/www/photos/monthphoto.html>.
