Introduction to Variables and Values for the Census 2000 Special EEO File

Generally, the primary variables on the Census 2000 Special EEO File are race and ethnicity, with additional racial categories for Hawaii; sex; 472 detailed occupational categories (or 471 detailed occupational categories, when the unemployed with no work experience are not included); geography (including, in most instances, the United States, each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Metropolitan Statistical Areas, counties and places); educational attainment; age groups; earnings categories; and 88 industry groupings. A resource for matching detailed occupation or job titles with Census 2000 occupations and vice versa can be found in the Alphabetical and Classified Indices of Occupations from the Census Bureau. A similar resource for matching industries from the Alphabetical and Classified Indices of Industries is also available from the same Census web site as for occupations.

Specifications for Variables and Values on the Census 2000 Special EEO File

The Consortium has specified that the following list of essential variables and values be created for the Special EEO File. As the aggregation of industry groupings are dependent on Census confidentiality restrictions, the codes for industry groups were not part of the Consortium's specifications. The details for the industries to be contained in the industry groups are available in the crosswalk for the Census 2000 Industry Categories for the Special EEO File.
