Washington, D.C. - The National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), will meet in a public session on Friday, October 29, 2004 at 9 a.m. in Room M-09 of The Nancy Hanks Center, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.

The public session will feature a presentation on choreography and copyright issues. Legal counsel and artistic representatives from the Martha Graham Dance Company will discuss the recent legal battle over the rights to the Graham repertory. They will review the most recent court decision that allowed the group to perform, and look at the implications for other choreographers working today.

In addition, representatives from the Alabama Shakespeare Festival will share highlights from their recently completed tour of Macbeth at 13 military bases in 11 states. The tour was part of NEA’s national initiative, Shakespeare in American Communities, the largest tour of Shakespeare plays in American history. Through the initiative, several acting companies bring performances and educational activities to more than 100 communities in all 50 states. Shakespeare in American Communities military base tour is made possible through a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, the U.S. Department of Defense and the military services, and Arts Midwest.
