U.S. Senate Confirms Appointment of Six New Members to National Council on the ArtsDecember 11, 2006
Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Senate has confirmed the appointment of six new members nominated by President George W. Bush to serve on the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts. The new Council members are: Ben Donenberg, theater producer and arts educator, Los Angeles, CA "The National Council on the Arts provides important and invaluable advice and counsel to the Arts Endowment," said NEA Chairman Dana Gioia. "The President has appointed a group of artists and patrons who bring the passion, expertise, and commitment necessary to perform this duty on behalf of the American people. The entire NEA staff looks forward to working with all of our new Council members." The National Council on the Arts advises the NEA Chairman on programs and policies. Council members review and make recommendations to the Chairman on grant applications, funding program guidelines, and national initiatives. Members are chosen for their widely recognized knowledge of the arts, their expertise or profound interest in the arts, and their established record of distinguished service or achievement in the arts. The Council consists of 14 private citizens and six ex officio Members of Congress. The new Council members will replace outgoing members Don V. Cogman, Mary Costa, Katharine Cramer DeWitt, Teresa Lozano Long, Maribeth Walton McGinley, and Deedie Potter Rose.
