National Endowment for the Arts Statement Regarding the 2007 Venice Biennale
April 6, 2006 Washington, D.C. – National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia released the following statement upon the announcement of Felix Gonzalez-Torres to represent the United States at the 2007 Venice Biennale. (A press release is available on the Department of State web site at http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2006/64112.htm) "The selection of Mr. Gonzalez-Torres is the first time in more than twenty years of the United States' representation at the Venice Biennale, that the work of a deceased artist will be presented. That our distinguished panel recommended Mr. Gonzalez-Torres demonstrates the power and contemporary resonance of his work. If I was slightly surprised by this bold choice, I was also deeply pleased." The NEA manages the Federal Advisory Committee on International Exhibitions that advises the Department of State on the selection of artists to represent the U.S. at major international exhibitions to which the department is invited to participate. The committee consists of seven members; curators, museum directors, and artists; that meet to review proposals submitted by curators from across the country. The committee met on March 20.
