Job creation and the emerging home computer market

Laura Freeman
Economist, Division of Monthly Industry Employment Statistics, Bureau of Labor Statistics

The rapid spread of personal computers for use at home has generated more than 150,000 jobs in sales and software since 1988-58,000 in 1995 alone; the PC software industry and the information retrieval services industry, in particular, have benefited from rising employment. This article explores the job growth in each of these industries and the impetus behind it.
