National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia to Testify at Fiscal Year 2008 House Appropriations Hearing
March 20, 2007 Washington, D.C. - The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies, with Chairman Norm Dicks (D-WA) and Ranking Member Todd Tiahrt (R-KS), will hold its hearing on the National Endowment for the Arts’ Fiscal Year 2008 funding, immediately following National Endowment for the Humanities testimony at 9:30 am on Tuesday, March 20, 2007. The hearing will be held in Room B308, Rayburn House Office Building, located at Independence Avenue S.W. and South Capitol Street. National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia will present President George W. Bush’s Fiscal Year 2008 budget request of $128.4 million to the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee. The FY 2008 request includes support for Direct Endowment Grants, State and Regional Partnerships, Challenge America: Reaching Every Community, and the NEA initiative American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius, which provides touring and educational program across the arts fields. American Masterpieces includes support for the Big Read, an NEA initiative that encourages literary reading by asking communities to come together to read and discuss one book. The increased funding requested by the President will help the Endowment expand the Big Read to reach 400 communities nationwide. Testifying on behalf of the Endowment are Marie Pyko, Public Services Manager, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library in Topeka, Kansas and Craig Hella Johnson, Artistic Director of the choral ensemble Conspirare from Austin, Texas.
