National Council on the Arts Convenes Under NEA Chairman Dana Gioia's Leadership

Five New Council Members to Participate

Washington, D.C. -- National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia will lead his first meeting with the National Council on the Arts, the agency's advisory body, on Friday, April 11, 2003. Five new members of the Council will also participate for the first time. The meeting is open to the public and will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Room M-09 at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.

Chairman Gioia will give the keynote presentation and lead the Council in a discussion about his vision for the agency. New Council members attending their first meeting are: Mary Costa, an opera singer from Knoxville, Tenn.; Makoto Fujimura, a painter from New York, N.Y.; David H. Gelernter, an author, critic and educator from Woodbridge, Conn.; Jerry Pinkney, an artist and illustrator from Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.; and Dr. Karen Lias Wolff, a music school dean from Ann Arbor, Mich. They will be sworn into office by Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor in a private ceremony on April 10. Their biographies are available on the NEA Web site.
