THE WHITE HOUSE

WASHINGTON

June 23, 2006

I send greetings to all those celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highways.

President Eisenhower recognized the importance of having the world's most efficient and reliable transportation system. In a 1955 message to the Congress, he wrote of a "vast system of inter-connected highways criss-crossing the Country." Today, 50 years after the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 was signed, the Eisenhower Interstate System has made our society the most mobile in the world and contributed to the continuing growth of our economy.

My Administration remains committed to providing the American people with the best possible transportation system. In August 2005, I was proud to sign the "Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users." This important piece of legislation will help States upgrade our Nation's network of roads, bridges, and mass transit systems; ease traffic congestion in communities across our country; and ensure our highways remain the safest in the world.

I appreciate the Department of Transportation, transportation professionals, and all those who are dedicated to ensuring that our interstate system keeps our country moving. Your hard work helps sustain critical networks of commerce, advances our economy, and contributes to our national security.

Laura and I send our best wishes on this special occasion.

George W. Bush (Signature)
