In 2007,
NOAA Celebrated 200 Years of Science, Service and Stewardship

Our parent organization, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) celebrated 200 years of science, service and stewardship in 2007. While NOAA was officially recognized in 1970, our beginnings can actually be traced back to 1807, when America's oldest scientific agency, The Survey of the Coast, was established by President Thomas Jefferson.

Two hundred years later, NOAA continues to gather data from the atmosphere, oceans, sun and space and using these data sets to support both research and services. NOAA's National Climate Data Center (NCDC) is the world's largest active archive of weather data. NCDC archives weather and climate date, produces climate publications, and supports data requests from all over the world.

NOAA has a comprehensive web site dedicated to their 200th Anniversary. For several topics, including atmospheric research, climate data, and environmental satellites, the web site has features describing their foundations, transformations and visions. These features include:

From the roots of what has now become NOAA, to the recent period of great technological change, and a look toward the future, this web site covers a wide range of historical topics to what we may expect over the next 30 years.
