1997 ECONOMIC CENSUS - MANAGEMENT OF COMPANIES AND ENTERPRISES (PART - NAICS 551111 AND NAICS 551112)
PURPOSE
To provide periodic and comprehensive statistics about establishments classified as holding companies. The United States Code, Title 13, requires this census and provides for mandatory responses.
COVERAGE
NAICS 551111 and NAICS 551112 includes all domestic establishments that hold the securities of (or other equity interests in) companies and enterprises for the purpose of owning a controlling interest or influencing management decisions. Data for the other part of sector 55,which includes establishments (except government establishments) that administer, oversee, and manage establishments of the company or enterprise and that normally undertake the strategic or organizational planning and decision making role of the company or enterprise, are presented in a separate report. In 1997, over 12 thousand employer establishments accounted for more than $62 billion of revenue in NAICS 551111 and NAICS 551112.
CONTENT
Data obtained for all reporting units include kind of business, geographic location, revenue, annual and first quarter payroll, the number of employees for the pay period including March 12, revenue by source, and other industry-specific measures.
FREQUENCY
Every 5 years, beginning in 1992, for years ending in "2" and "7." Data collection begins in December of the census year and reports are due about 8 weeks later. Data are requested for activities taking place during the census calendar year.
METHODS
A mail-out/mail-back data collection for all establishments of multiunit companies and single-establishment employers.
PRODUCTS
Geographic Area Series consists of 1 PDF (portable document format) report, which includes data for the U.S., each state, and the District of Columbia. Reports tabulate data for establishments of firms with payroll by kind of business for the U.S. and each state.
USES
The Bureau of Economic Analysis will use the data to benchmark the national income and product accounts and input-output tables. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will use the data in developing productivity measures.
Trade associations will use census data to analyze their industry. Enterprises in this industry will use census data to determine their market share, evaluate their performance relative to the rest of the industry, and develop marketing strategies.
