History Division

The History Division researches, collects, preserves, and exhibits the history of Albuquerque and the Middle Rio Grande Valley from the founding early Spanish settlements prior to the Pueblo Revolt in 1680 and the settlement of Albuquerque in 1706 to the present. In addition, the History Division exhibits traveling shows of a historic nature. Other sections of the History Division include the Photoarchives and Casa San Ysidro: The Gutiérrez/Minge House.

Four Centuries: The History of Albuquerque – The permanent history exhibit focus is on historical maps of the southwest region of the United States, Spanish occupation, Camino Real, Hispanic life, Civil War and statehood in 1912.

America’s Most Loved Reporter: Ernie Pyle, Organized by The Albuquerque Museum
The Albuquerque Museum presents the story of Pulitzer Prize-winning news correspondent Ernie Pyle. Two generations ago Ernie Pyle was a household name and, until his tragic death in 1945, he was America’s most loved reporter.

The 1914 Ingram/Foster Biplane
The Ingram/Foster biplane is believed to be the finest surviving example of an original Curtiss-design pusher. It was designed after the first biplanes flown in New Mexico by Charles Walsh in 1911, and Lincoln Beachey in 1912.
History Division Holdings
In 1967 the Albuquerque Historical Society donated its collection to The Albuquerque Museum forming the nucleus of the museum's permanent history collection. From that time forward people generously continue to contribute items of historical importance to the collection. If you have historical artifacts relating to Albuquerque and the Middle Rio Grande Valley history, please contact the History Division.

Photo Archive Department
The Photoarchive contains a large collection of historical photographs
on Albuquerque and surrounding area. The photographs date from 1880
when New Town was founded to about 1950. If you have old photographs
of Albuquerque and wish to donate them to the Photoarchives please
contact that department.

The Photoarchive is open by appointment only. Please call the museum at 505-243-7255 for an appointment.
The Photoarchive also produces exhibitions for the museum and community. Brought to Light: A Great Depression Era Photographer’s Study of Albuquerque Business is a recent example.
