Conservation & Environmental Policy

Crop and livestock production can damage water quality, wildlife habitat (including wetlands), and air quality. Conservation and environmental policy encourage adoption of environmentally sound practices through voluntary payment programs, regulation, and other means. ERS conducts economic research on the efficiency, effectiveness, and equity of policies and programs directed toward improving the environmental performance of the agricultural sector.

Spotlights

Managing Manure To Improve Air and Water Quality—Pollution from animal waste poses management challenges because it can affect multiple resources. This report assesses the economic and environmental tradeoffs between water and air quality policies that could require the animal sector to take potentially costly measures to abate pollution.

Conservation-Compatible Practices and Programs: Who Participates? —This report finds that farm business, operator, and household characteristics are associated with the likelihood that the farmer will adopt certain conservation-compatible practices and the degree to which the farmer participates in conservation programs.
