The U.S. Office of Personnel Management Helps
Shrink the Digital Divide

Washington, D.C.-The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is heeding President Clinton's and Vice President Gore's call to close the "digital divide" so that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from the information revolution.

OPM is narrowing the technology gap by distributing surplus computers to high schools serving depressed areas. OPM is also deploying job information/touch-screen computer kiosks that access the federal jobs database - USAJOBS - to colleges and universities throughout the United States.

"The world is going digital...it is going high tech...and it is up to each and every one of us to ensure that no one is left behind," said OPM Director Janice R. Lachance. "We must lend a hand to those who don't have the resources to plug into the incredible technological changes that are changing the world."

OPM's touch-screen computer effort has reached more than 500,000 students across the country, while USAJOBS updates daily a job listing of nearly 15,000 positions with the federal government.

Two examples of OPM's effort to help the disadvantaged include its distribution of computers to communities within the Mississippi Delta region and to volunteer organizations such as Casa de Cultura in Del Rio, Texas. Casa de Cultura provides after school programs that teach English and citizenship and help children and their parents learn how to use a computer.

OPM oversees the federal work force and provides the American public with up-to-date employment information. OPM also supports U.S. agencies with personnel services and policy leadership including staffing tools, guidance on labor-management relations and programs to improve workforce performance.
