June 23, 1997: In a report to Congress released today by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, it was announced that more than 335,000 federal employees--46 percent men and 54 percent women--used sick leave in 1996 under the Federal Employees Family Friendly Leave Act of 1994 to provide care to ailing family members, or to arrange or attend funerals. June 23, 1997: The Office of Personnel Management has issued proposed regulations to grant federal employees in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and in St. Marys County, Maryland, a partial exemption from certain political activity restrictions of federal employees as included in the Hatch Act Reform Amendments of 1993. June 20, 1997: The Federal Human Resources Forum (FHRF) satellite telecast beams up at 1 p.m. EDT Wednesday, June 25 to go boldly where no FHRF broadcast has gone before: Helping federal managers and personnel officials across the nation install the Presidents Welfare to Work initiative at their agencies. President Clinton is asking government agencies to recruit and hire 10,000 former welfare recipients over the next four years. June 13, 1997: Federal employees soon will learn more about an important Clinton Administration initiative: increasing the number of children who are taken out of the public foster-care system and adopted into loving, permanent families. Events are scheduled in Washington, D.C., for June 17 and June 25. [News Release]

June 12, 1997: The U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will co-sponsor events on June 17 and 25 to encourage federal employees to consider adopting from among the 500,000 children in the public foster-care system. [News Release]

June 9, 1997: While the reinvention of federal government reduced the personnel rolls by another 52,628 permanent positions during Fiscal Year 1996, progress continued toward creating a workforce that better reflects America as a whole, according to a report released by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Overall minority representation increased in FY 1996, with notable improvements showing up in the percentages of women and minorities employed at higher levels. [News Release]

June 9, 1997: The U.S. Office of Personnel Management has prepared a report showing the percentage of federal workers represented by unions has remained steady at 59 percent of the federal workforce over the past five years, and the percentage of represented blue collar workers decreased 3 percent while the percent of represented white collar workers increased 2 percent over the same time period. June 9, 1997: The U.S. Office of Personnel Management is issuing final regulations to implement the President Clintons memorandum directing agencies undergoing downsizing to develop career transition assistance programs to benefit their displaced federal employees. [News Release]

June 9, 1997: This week, members of the Clinton Administrations National Partnership Council will hear from a panel of agency and union representatives on challenges to federal labor-management partnerships.
